What is Grilling in Cooking?

Grilling Cooking Method

The grilling cooking method includes the fast cooking of food from direct heat touching the surface of the food from above, below, or from the sides of the meat placed. The name grilling is given due to the use of the grill on which the pieces of meat and/or vegetables are placed to get that crispiness and enhanced texture in a few minutes.

A grilling pan can also be used for the same purpose which is typically known as the frying pan. The heat transfer in the grilling can be stated as the thermal radiation which allows cooking the food well on time without leaving any bit of uncooked part behind.

History of grilling

When we look at the history of grilling, we find that grilling has been part of our lives for 500,000 years. In the 17th century, the Arawak Tribe began to grill food and it became the basis of its origin. The method of sticking a piece of meat on a stick and grilling it on the fire was named as Barbacoa. In the 18th century, the conquerors from Spain adopted this method but modified them in their own way. Till the middle of the 19th century, grilling was mainly used as the means of amusement in picnics and campsites in most areas.

However, after the Second World War, when the suburbs got intermingled with the middle class, grilling became the top cooking method in the entire world. If a person ate grilled food, he waited for quite a long time to taste the first barbecued food and get himself blown away. Since then, the variety of exotic flavors and spices changed but the deliciousness of this food remained intact, it not more.

Evolution of Grilling Tools

Grilling has been an indispensable part of our lives since the 16th century, but it mainly spread after the Second World War when suburbs entered as well. Grilling was primarily done to pass times in picnics but grilling first came into being when someone did pit-cooking out onto the fire which gave us the name of Barbecue.

In the 1940s or 1950s, many changes took place in the modernization of the grilling tools. The simple sticking out the piece of meat over the fire was changed to using a grill with foldable or removable legs. After this discovery, another grill that came into being was a charcoal cooker which was supposed to get rolled in the form of a wheelbarrow.

In 1957, a new charcoal grill came into being which was known as the LAZY-MAN Open Fire Charcoal Broiler which was modified in the year 1970. However, in these tools, the control over heat was lesser as compared to today’s technology. Nowadays, gas as well as charcoal grills are available that give you most of the control of the heat. This equipment cooks better than the old grilling tools. It does not only char the pieces of meat, but it also provides more flavor, texture, and tenderness to your food.
