Boiling Cooking Method

What is Boiling in Cooking

Boiling is the most primitive technique which involves the usage of water for cooking purposes. The water is boiled at 100 degrees or 212 °F temperature until the bubbles vigorously start hitting the surface of the water. Dry seasonings are added in the boiling water to ensure the perfect blend of the flavors in the food.

It is a super moist method of cooking as it involves an adequate amount of water until the food is cooked properly without the fear of getting burnt. These boiled foods are the soft foods preventing the inner linings of your mouth from getting any cuts as from the fried and tender foods.

History of Boiling

Stone boiling

In ancient times, a stone boiling technique originated in which people used heated rocks followed by conduction and convection to cook their food. The stones were first heated and then dropped into the water container to pass the heat and make the water warm enough. The people used that warm water to boil their food whether they were vegetables, meat, or legumes.

Almost 30,000 years ago, the prehistoric people invented earth ovens lined with hot stones all around for boiling the water in the pit for cooking food. Earlier, the assumption was that boiled food is associated with the low class and poor people only, however, this food has now become a trend in well-off and health-conscious people.

Evolution of Boiling Equipments

In France 1679, Denis Pepin designed the first boiler made up of wrought iron, which after turned into steel after further realizations that steel has more advantages of high pressure and temperature. Later, in 1867 George Babcock and Steven Wilcox were the founders of steam-generating boilers. These steam-generating boilers were developed as convention boilers.

From the use of earth ovens, stone boiling and other primitive techniques, boiling has evolved, and the tools have modernized not only domestically but also commercially. The new boilers are specially designed and developed for a better instant output.

Nowadays, boilers have been made up of various energy sources like electrodes, water tubes, gas, coal, natural gas, biomass, and fuel oil. Moreover, special thermometers have been designed in order to maintain the boiling temperature while cooking process. Also, the pressure cooker technique can be adapted for instant boiling.

Pressure cooker and instant boiler

Water is a very good heat conductor until it reaches 100 degrees because it starts to evaporate soon after reaching the boiling point. Therefore, those food items which cannot be instantly boiled are preferably boiled in the pressure cooker. The water vapors produced in the pressure cooker at 100 degrees remain captured instead of escaping. These water vapors along with the boiling liquid cause more pressure and hence, stimulate the food to be cooked quickly.

Summing up, boiling has been the most primitive and trending moist-heat cooking method being used nowadays. It has major beneficial effects on human health and may increase the living standard if consumed and prepared in a proper way.
